Measured concentration (ppm)
Dissolved hydrogen is stated in ppm (mg/L). Ask for measured values from third-party testing rather than "up to" figures from the marketing. Without a test report, the number is only a promise.
Learn
Search for the best hydrogen water bottle and you mostly find ranked lists where nobody has measured anything. No independent best-in-test exists for this category, but there are facts you can compare. Below are the criteria, the formats and the questions that separate a real test from an ad.
The rankings
Most hydrogen water bottle roundups are affiliate pages. The writer earns a commission when you click through and buy, and the ranking tends to reflect the manufacturers' own claims rather than measurements. The products may still be good, but the list is marketing. A real test states its method: how concentration was measured, in which water, at what temperature and how long after preparation. Without that, a ranking is an opinion. So ignore the placements and compare for yourself, on what can be checked.

A PEM/SPE cell with a membrane keeps hydrogen apart from oxygen and by-products during generation. Simpler cells without a membrane cost less, but often mean lower purity and a shorter life.
Glass and aluminium hold hydrogen better than plastic and age better too. Check the electrodes as well. Platinum-coated titanium is standard in better cells.
Small cells scale up and lose performance unless you clean them regularly. Find out how the bottle is cleaned, which parts wear out, and whether spares are available.
Overlooked
In cells without a membrane, both electrolysis reactions happen in the same water. Small amounts of ozone can form, and in water that contains chloride, chlorine compounds too. Nothing to dramatize, but a fair reason to ask how the cell is built.
How many preparations does one charge last, and how much does the bottle hold? A small volume means more preparations per day. Hydrogen also leaves the water quickly, so drink it fresh.
Count per glass, not per purchase. Tablets are cheap to start with, but you pay for every dose. A bottle is a one-off cost plus any spares. A countertop dispenser costs more, but makes larger volumes of fresh water at home.
The formats
The format often matters more than the brand. For more on each format, see our hydrogen water guide.
Portable electrolysis, one glass at a time. A good format if the cell holds up, so check it against the criteria above.
Generate hydrogen right in the glass. Easy and cheap to try, but the cost per dose adds up over time.
A dispenser like Lita Aqua makes 2.4L of fresh hydrogen water at home, for people who drink it every day rather than the odd glass. Sold by inquiry.
Hydrogen water is quick to drink. Inhalation with a device like Lita Air delivers a higher concentration in a single session. Compare the formats.
Questions and answers
The better ones are convenient and make fresh hydrogen water wherever you are. But quality varies widely, and small cells often deliver lower concentrations than the marketing suggests. Molecular hydrogen is a real field of research, but the evidence is promising, not sufficient for health claims. Never buy on promises of results.
Measured concentration verified by a third party, a PEM/SPE cell with a membrane, glass or aluminium rather than plastic, easy cleaning and battery life. Check warranty, returns and support where you live as well.
By measuring it. Ask the maker for a third-party test report, or measure it yourself with H2 test drops (methylene blue titration). Use the water you actually drink, because concentration varies with water quality, temperature and time since preparation.
